Mangalore: A protest meeting of deprived and depressed workers under AIWU led by Vishnumurthi Bhatt, was held at the DCO grounds on Friday to press for several demands already made by various classed of workers, either for security of services or for increased wages, or for better health benefits or for a new ESIC hospital in every district in State, to serve the needs of labourers and their families including the cottage industry of Beedi workers.
Bhatt, speaking on the occasion complained that the workers did not get their dues for the amount of work they did in factories or officers or mills or industries in the public sector and private ownership all this years in view of a partiality in economic matters such as wealth income or goods given to them by various managers of such units. He added that the workers had to be in good health and well fed and properly dressed to do their jobs efficiently and daily in the place of work. But what do we gets he asked, and answered the workers did not get to meals a day in view of inflation in prices, they were in bad health as there was no ESIC hospital they could depend upon when they were sick, and they had no Health (Arogya) card in the unorganized labor sector while upper classes had everything they could ask for. He demanded a higher income for workers in organized as well as unorganized sector when these people were producing economic products so much, like a farmer on his fields.
He asked the Govt. to rise the alleviant of Rs.250 so for paid to GP members to attend their meeting on election to serve the people to Rs.6,000 pm and added that if the regular demands made by the workers unions so far were ignored then all hell will be let loose on authorities wherever they may be, to make them bend to the normal wishes of the wage-earning laborers.
Dalit leader Ashok Konchady, labor leader Sudatta Jain and several other Union leaders were present at the massive rally that urged the Govt. to meet their demands.
