Bangalore:Twenty-five passengers were injured when a passenger train derailed near Tumaraguddi, between Suladhal and Soolebhavi stations near here on Monday, senior police and Railway officials said.
Earlier, a Railway Ministry spokesperson in New Delhi said two people were killed in the incident involving a Miraj–Hubli passenger train; Railway Minister C.P. Joshi even announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the next of the kin of the victims. But, a few hours later, the same spokesperson said there were no deaths.
Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil and Additional Superintendent of Police S.H. Ganga Raddi also said here there was no casualty.
Of the 25 people injured in the accident, 24 were said to be out of danger while one was critical, the police officials said.
The derailment was caused as the railway track was washed away after the earth caved in, following incessant rain, the Railway official said.
The engine and four bogies of the train went off the track, railway sources said, adding that rescue operations have been completed. Rescue teams shifted all the injured to hospitals.
