Mangalore : The DK district administration in association with DK Zilla Panchayat (ZP), District Health and Family Welfare Department, and District Vector Borne Diseases Control Office organized a workshop for media people on National Vector Borne Diseases Control programme at RAPCC Auditorium of Wenlock District Hospital on Aug 6, Monday.
Speaking after inaugurating the event, Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, chief executive officer of the DK Zilla Panchayat said that around 25 percent of malaria cases have been reported from the twin districts.
He said that over 3,16,000 children are studying in 1454 primary schools and 177 high schools in DK district. Hence with the intention to create awareness among them, the administrations will direct the experts and officials from the Health Department to talk to the children in various schools about the seasonal and water-borne diseases during prayer time for 5-10 minutes a day.
In the academic year, around 3,612 malaria cases and 129 dengue cases have been reported across DK. Malaria is common disease found in cities while dengue is found in villages, hence measures must be taken to prevent to these in both rural and urban areas.
District health officer O. R. Shrirangappa said that people must individually take responsibility of their health by using mosquito nets, which can prevent diseases like malaria, chikungunya and dengue.
Dr. Arunkumar, district vector borne disease control officer, submitted a PowerPoint presentation on diseases caused by mosquitoes.
