Mangalore: The much awaited 400 kv power transmission lines between Udupi and Shantigrama in Hassan district will be inaugurated on September 12, Wednesday. The power line covering a distance of 186 kms will enable operation of the second unit of UPCL thermal plant with a generating capacity of 600 mw and helps the transmission of the same to the state grid.The new line has been built at a cost of nearly Rs. 400 crore.
Energy Minister Shobha Karandlaje says as the line has a double circuit, the reliability of transmission is also high. Construction of this line was a challenge as it had to pass through difficult terrain of Malnad region. There are a total of 530 transmission towers with a height of 46 metres.
The new line, which will transmit 1,200 MW of power from the two units of UPCL, has actually got capacity to transmit 2,000 mw.
