Bantwal: AMR Power Project, operating at Shamboor, was ordered to close down temporarily, in view of 3 days getting drowned in flash floods, caused in Netravathi River on Tuesday, by company employees without a warning by letting out excess water from the dam owned by the company.
The students died at Nandavana near Panemangalore, when washing their bodies in a flash flood on Dec 6, as they were not alerted earlier.
The local residents raised a protest, led by M. Tungappa Bangera, a former member of Dakshina Kannada Zilla panchayat. They presented a memo to taluk officer (Tahsildar), seeking stalling of the AMR Project plant, which was held responsible for taking the lives of 3 days.
While two bodies were recovered, Yashodhar could not be found. The protesting villagers said AMR project had drowned 11 persons in 3 years, and was playing havoc with local people on the banks of the river.
A tense situation prevailed when engineers of AMR were called in to answer charges. The protestors demanded adequate compensation to all 11 victims.
