Mangalore: Jagotik Konkani Songhotton (JKS) organised a -day seminar titled Scripts and Languages of Modern India with Special Reference to Konkani at Kalaangan on March 10 Saturday
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Valerian Rodrigues of the Centre for Political Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) said that, Konkani is the language spoken by 2 million people spread across different states and cultures. Script are meaningless but language is necessary to support its expression. People use various scripts such as Malayalam, Kannada, Devanagari, Roman, and Urdu to write Konkani and this variety must be continued.
He also said that even though Konkani writers are united to get Konkani included in the 8th schedule of the Constitution, they have divided over the script issue, he said.
Eric Ozario, the general secretary of JKS, said that Konkani speaking people must give importance to language and not the script.
Dr. Anvita Abbi, professor of linguistics at JNU Delhi, was also present.
