Jammu : About 600 pilgrims who embarked on Amarnath Yatra despite the Amarnath Devalay Committee stating that it has fixed the Yatra period this year from June 25 to August 2 due to severe snowfall in the region, were arrested on June 3, Sunday.
The Hindus had embarked on the yatra stating they should be permitted at least for a 60 day Yatra in view of Jyeshta Poornima on June 4. The pilgrims had tried to proceed towards Amarnath despite heavy security arrangements and ban orders.
Ramakanth Dubey, Chief of Jammu unit of VHP who led the pilgrims said the state government was curtailing the religious rights of the Hindus. However, police officials said those pilgrims who tried to violate the prohibitory orders were arrested.
