Mangaluru : The Academic Council of Mangalore University on Wednesday declined to grant permanent affiliation to seven government colleges in its jurisdiction, as the colleges did not meet certain conditions laid out by the university.
The tenure of permanent affiliation, once granted, would be for five years. Later, it would have to be renewed for every five years by filing an application to the university.
When the matter came up for discussion, a member pointed out that the colleges would have to meet the requirements laid out in the statute relating to granting permanent affiliation.
A prominent requirement was that 75 per cent of the employees in the applicant college should have been recruited on permanent basis.
Some of the other conditions were that the applicant college should not have closed any course five years prior to the date of filing the application, and it should have library facilities and a play ground. An official told the meeting that of the 200 plus degree colleges under the university, 40 colleges had permanent affiliation now. Others would have to renew the affiliation annually.
K. Byrappa, Vice-Chancellor, told the council that the matter required to be discussed elaborately. Hence, a decision on granting permanent affiliation to those colleges would be taken up next year.
He said that a decision on the same can not be taken in a hurry as it would set a bad precedent. The council agreed to grant affiliation to postgraduate courses in Commerce and Economics at Government First Grade College, Belthangady, with an intake of 30 seats and 25 seats, respectively.
