Bantwal : Bantwal Rural SI Mahesh Prasad was in the news recently after he who appeared before the District Court in connection with a suicide case following dowry harassment reported in 2008, was first remanded to judicial custody and then released on bail the same evening.
The SI had faced charges of not appearing before the court despite repeated notices and even a show cause notice. He it is said appeared before the court when a warrant was served.
The incident had taken place in 2008 when Vinayaka Billawa was the Bantwal inspector.
The case which was heard in the Bantwal court for two years was later transferred to the District court in Mangalore in 2010. Bantwal station records state that the then SI Vinayaka Billawa had furnished all documents in court.
However when the case was reopened in the Mangalore court, it came to light that all details were not furnished and thus a notice served. Mainly the court had wanted as evidence the clothes which the woman was wearing last. In 2012 Vinayaka Billawa, the Bantwal Rural SI was transferred and Mahesh Prasad appointed in his place.
In July 2013, the court asked Mahesh Prasad to furnish evidence. He also told the court that he was unable to furnish evidence.
Speaking to Mega Media news, Mahesh Prasad said “ The court had asked me to appear in person on July 31. I had already told higher officials that I did not have in possession the clothes worn by the woman last. But the previous SI had written in records that he had furnished evidence. How can I produce evidences which I do not have?” he questioned.
The case was settled on July 31 with the intervention of Bantwal DySP Sadananda Varnekar, SP Abhishek Goel and the Public Prosecutor. Mahesh Prasad said no warrant had been served and the court had not remanded him to judicial custody.
