Udupi: The Auto Rickshaw driver’s display card system proposing the show of a display card about his name and other details at the back of his seat in his vehicle, which was mandatory some time in November 2013 has been held back by the transport ministry of the state Govt., following complaints by some auto drivers and their union to Oscar Fernandez, Union minister for transport who spoke to the state home minister K J George and advised him to put on hold the procedure for some time.
There was no opposition in Mangalore to the system, when it was implemented. But in Udupi the auto rickshaw drivers following a Manipal rape case felt shaken to have their names on a display card at their backs in every vehicle they drove. The drivers complained to Oscar that their names will be degraded if the display card is attached to the back of their seats in each vehicle, to enable travelers to find fault with them and complaint to the police every now and then.
In view of Oscar’s advice to George the display card system has been discontinued in Udupi city in December.
