On Wednesday, when BJP senior leader Sushma Swaraj raked up Nido Taniam’s death in the Lok Sabha, she made a statement that may not go down well with the North-East community.

Though she urged all political parties to take the issue seriously and provide security to all of North-East people across the country, she inadvertently made a racial slur. She said: “A child came from Arunachal Pradesh and they made fun of his hair style. We need to understand the diversity of the country that a teekhi naakwala and a chapti naakwala (those with sharp noses and flat noses) all belong to India.” Nido Taniam’s death was widely discussed in Lok Sabha The statement is sure to reinforce stereotype about people from the North East region.
