Mangalore : District Administration in association with Department of Kannada and Culture and Karavali Veerashaiva Kshemabhivriddhi Sangha observed birth anniversary of Saint Basaveshwara at Town Hall on May 2, Friday.

Swami Girisiddeshwara Shivacharya of Basavanagudi and Rudramuni Mahaswami of Gurupura Jangama Mutt inaugurated the programme.

Presiding over the event, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said that it is necessary to celebrate ‘Basava Jayanthi’ in memory of Saint Basaveshwara, who was great social reformer struggled to eradicate social evils like untouchability and casteism.

Banavasi Somashekhar delivered a talk on the life and teachings of saint Basaveshwara.

Akkamahadevi Veershaiva Mahila Sangha Founder-President Suma Arun Manvi and Dr Katyayini, Lecturer at Dr M V Shetty College were present.

As a part of event, a cultural programme based on the life of Basaveshwara was held.
