Mangalore : Mangalore City Corporation conducted a special session about contracting solid waste disposal work to a private company at the MCC auditorium on May 6, Tuesday.
During the session, many city corporators raised objection to the fact that they were unaware that work of solid waste disposal of the city is been given contract to Mumbai-based Antony Waste Handling Cell Private Limited (AWHCPL).
They also said that, the corporation officials had held discussion since 2007 relating to entrusting this work to Antony Company, but they were not aware of latest developments.
Mayor Mahabala Marla said that the decision of contract was discussed at various levels has reached a decisive phase and the meeting was held to inform this to the corporators. He also assured to provide detailed information about tender and other aspects two to three days to the corporators.
Corporators like Naveen D’Souza, D K Ashok, and Deepak Poojary, said that they wanted to know whether corporation have thought about problem to be aroused after the work is been handed over to the new entity.
They also asked about the source of fund Rs 18 crore to be provided annually to be spend for the project and opposed to increase the additional tax from the citizen.
Whereas Corporators like Shashidhar Hegde and Harinath said that the corporation must move further after providing full details of the new arrangement.
The Company representatives said that the company has been handling waste disposal work at various places since the last three decades, and Mangalore will be first city in Karnataka to come under them.
They also said that they have planned to split the city into North and South for waste disposal, and sweep 25 km of road in the city through machines. The vehicles will be equipped with global positioning systems, and the company plans to collect 100 percent waste from every house spread over 60 wards of the city.
City corporation commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde, Deputy mayor Kavitha Vasu, and joint commissioner Gokuldas Nayak, were present.
