New Delhi : K Kavitha, Member of Parliament and daughter of Telangana’s first Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, was booked on Monday for her alleged comments on Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana.

But the MP said she had been misunderstood.

“I’ve been misunderstood. Despite that if people want to file a case, then let law take its course. Kashmir and Telangana are very much a part of India,” she said.

A case of sedition was filed against the 36-year-old TRS leader following directions from a local court, said a South Zone police official.

While responding to a question at an event organised by a national daily last month, Kavitha had allegedly said, “Jammu & Kashmir and Telangana were both forcefully, and at the same time, annexed to the Indian Union. When I say I feel strongly, it’s because we were both separate countries, but were merged with the Indian Union after Independence. In 1947, we were not a part of India.”

The complaint against the Nizamabad MP was filed by K Karunasagar, an advocate and convener of BJP’s legal cell in Hyderabad. “Offended by the anti-nationalist comment, I filed a petition against K. Kavitha and the court directed police to register a case,” the complainant said.

The police official said legal opinion is being sought on the matter for further action.
