Mangalore : Minister for Energy D K Shivakumar inaugurated ‘Swarna Soudha’, to mark the golden jubilee celebrations of Karnataka Electricity Board (KEB) Engineers’ Association at Kavoor on October 28, Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that the people and elected representatives of Coastal district must identify the land for the implementation of proposed ultra mega power project. The residents of Niddodi have expressed opposition for the establishment of ultra mega power projects, he said.
Speaking on the allegation that the UPCL had not adhered to the promises on environmental issues, Minister said that within 15 days the government will call a meeting to discuss the issue. They will ensure that the company will keep up its promises made to the government.
Commenting on shortage of power in the state, he said that the energy department has decided to give emphasis to solar energy and the total of 1,000 mega watt generated through solar power will be added to the grid. The department will support those who wish to set up power units in the state and interested to supply 24 hours of electricity.
The Minister said that as the consumers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts are paying the electricity bills promptly, hence the government is committed to supply 24-hour electricity to the coastal districts.
Further, the government will recruit 6,000 linemen within four to five months. The decision on the recruitment will be taken at a board meeting within 15 days, he added.
