Mangaluru : DYFI and SFI in association with other like-minded organizations took part on ‘walk for unity’ a Harmony march towards coexistence with Hindu, Muslims and Christians on Tuesday, Feb 24.
The Harmony walk was begin at Ambedkar Circle and culminated at office of the Deputy Commissioner .
Speaking on the occasion Veerabhadra Channamalla Swami of Nidumamidi Mutt said that Bhagwad Gita cannot be considered a national religious text acceptable to people of all religions.
The Constitution was the only “national religious text” acceptable to all, and not even Bible or Koran qualified for that position, he added.
Further he said that there was no need to burn any religious text on the pretext of opposing them.
He said that if Bhagvad Gita was declared as national religious text it would be an “impropriety” done to the multi-culturalism of the country.
The seer said that communal forces within all religions were attempting to destabilise society by organising their respective samajotsavas. Instead, “samaja sudharanotsavas” (rallies to reform society) should be organised, he said.
He said that samajotsavas of all religions gave scope for communal conflict. Such events were being organised with a political motive of making certain sections of society, such as Dalits and backward classes, as “vote bank”. The poor sections of society were being prevented from coming to social mainstream, he alleged.
Expressing concern over “increasing religious intolerance”, the seer said that communalism and terrorism were assuming significance in society. Referring to the ‘ghar wapsi’ programme of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, he said that it was not proper to force someone to return to their religion. Everyone had the freedom to practise the religion of their choice.
The seer claimed that some Christians were converting people to their religion because in Hinduism the depressed sections of society were not being taken care of by the rich. He said that poorer sections within Hinduism were not getting education, employment and proper food. If the rich Hindus spent some money for the poor, the latter would remain within Hinduism religion, he claimed.
