Mangaluru : Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel on Wednesday said he would make available funds from the MP Local Area Development (MPLAD) scheme for enhancing passenger amenities at Surathkal Railway Station near here, while urging Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. (KRCL) to continue to maintain cleanliness.
He was participating in the Clean India campaign at the station as a part of KRCL’s Rail Passenger Facilitation Fortnight. Mr. Kateel said there had been a marked difference in the appearance and maintenance of the station since his last visit on November 5, 2014. Tidiness was clearly visible all over, he said.
The Lok Sabha Member said he had asked the Mangaluru City Corporation to repair the approach road to the station from the main road. He was informed by KRCL authorities that Ro-Ro height gauge at the entrance for trucks had been changed, allowing for smoother entry and exit of trucks at the station, thereby avoiding inconvenience to users of the main road.
Also, the façade of the station had been given a new look and autorickshaw parking facilities had been provided, Mr. Kateel was informed. Sudha Krishnamurthy, KRCL’s public relations manager, said that passenger cooperation too was required for the upkeep of the station.
The entire station premises was thoroughly cleaned during the drive. Around 60 National Service Scheme volunteers from the Govindadasa College, Surathkal, traffic police, over 100 employees of KRCL and others took part in the campaign throughout the day.
