Mangaluru : For the last five days, the residents of Mangaluru, suffered when water could not be supplied to the city from Thumbe.  For not keeping a close watch  of the main water pipe, to city and for the rupture of the pipeline, by allowing mud to be dumped on them,, the officials of the city corporation were held responsible. by MLA, J R Lobo,who warned them of  strict action.

 

Severe leakage of water was found  after depletion in quantum of water flowing through the 18 Mgd pipeline supplying water to the city from Thumbe purification plant was observed. After a close check water leakage in the main line near Kannur mosque was detected and water supply to the city was suspended from Thumbe plant. Work on a war footing,was undertaken with the help of JCBs, to remove mud that was dumped on the pipeline. he explained.

 

During the work, it was observed that a 1100 mm pipeline about ten feet below the main pipeline had also been broken, as a result of which water flow to Padil purification plant was hampered.

 

Because of rain, the mud on the pipeline turned into slippery clay. For removing it the operation took a longer time and it took August 5th to restore water supply, explained the MLA.

 

To prevent such incidents in future, he said, the entire pipeline and the land acquired on which the pipeline passes through, will have to be kept a close watch off. For this red flags, signs boards at different places,will have to be installed. Whenever a connection road to private property needs to be laid over the water pipeline, the concerned will have obtain prior permission from the city corporation, and lay the road in tune with the guidelines, suggested by the city corporation. The measures taken now would come into force with immediate effect, as per a decision taken in the City Corporation today according to the MLA.
