Bantwal : Two youths drowned in an abandoned red stone quarry pit filled with water in Chelyur village in Bantwal Rural police station limits on Sunday. August 9.
According to the Bantwal Rural police, Dixit, Jayaprakash and three others, all from Bolyar village, entered the water for swimming on Sunday morning. The other three managed to come out after a few minutes and saw Dixit and Jayaprakash struggling. They rushed to call others for help. The Konaje police came to the spot along with Fire and Emergency services personnel. The Fire and Emergency services personnel and local swimmers took around an hour to retrieve the bodies of Dixit and Jayaprakash. The police said the deceased were aged around 25. The incident comes a few weeks after Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim issued instructions to tahsildars to complete fencing around quarry pits and take other security steps, after a cases of children drowning were reported in the district.
Mr. Ibrahim had directed all tahsildars to publish in local newspapers the number of quarries in each taluk and ask people to report any unlisted quarries.
