Mangaluru ; The Dakshina Kannada unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has alleged that vested interests, including people from the sand mafia, have been making concerted efforts to get Mangaluru Rural Police Inspector Pramod, who has been containing illegal sand extraction in the jurisdiction, transferred.
DYFI president Santosh Bajal, said attempts were being made at the highest level of the government to transfer Mr. Pramod.
He alleged that two MLAs representing areas under Rural Station were involved in attempts to transfer the officer.
If the attempts are not immediately stopped, the DYFI will be forced to launch an agitation, Mr. Santosh warned.
There has been rampant illegal sand extraction from the Netravati in Adyar, Kannur, Valachchil and surrounding areas.
The miners threaten people and extract sand using machinery. The sand is being transported to other States too.
However, Mr. Pramod was able to curb these illegalities besides curtailing anti-social elements. He has converted the police station to a people-friendly one, Mr. Santosh said.
