Mangaluru : Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim has directed police and officials from Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to remove unscientific speed-breakers in the city limits.
He was chairing a district-level road safety committee meeting here on Tuesday. The DC directed the police to review all the humps in the city limits. The MCC was also asked to paint the humps and signboards. The public can give a list of unscientific humps to the police, who will inspect the spot and decide on the need for the humps.
The Corporation should ensure that the paint on the zebra crossing does not fade away. The MCC should constitute a group to paint the zebra crossing and humps. The road divider should also be constructed in a scientific manner, he added.
The meeting also decided to conduct a survey for the bus bays. The previous district-level road safety meeting had decided to set up 35 bus bays. The ACP (traffic) had submitted a list of bus bays to be constructed, two years ago.
Auto Drivers Association leader Arun Kumar and social activist Hanumanth Kamath said that Indian Road Congress guidelines were not followed while laying the humps. Many road humps are unscientific and are laid illegally owing to pressure from corporators and locals residents, they added.
Apart from slowing down the traffic far beyond the safety requirements, some of these unscientific humps also pose risk to the lives of motorists. Some of the speed-breakers at the cross roads are not visible to the motorists, who end up applying brake suddenly and risk collision with vehicles that are coming behind them, they said.
The MCC official said that a bus bay at Pumpwell had been approved by the Council.
Members of Auto Drivers’ Association said that the registered auto parks at Mallikatte were removed when the work on asphalting the road was taken up. On the one hand, the government distributes autorickshaws to unemployed youth under various scheme, and on the other hand there is no space for parking of autos in the city. The number of autos has increased to 6,000 from 5,686. The MCC has failed to develop auto parks identified by the police.
Hanumanth Kamath said that the road from Morgan’s Gate to Mahakalipadpu was in a deplorable condition. The pothole-ridden road is causing severe inconvenience to vehicle users. At the same time, roads in all major junctions in the city have developed huge potholes, he added.
To which, the DC directed MCC Commissioner Dr H N Gopalakrishna to take up road patch work on all major and interior roads on a priority basis.
The meeting also decided to instal signboards and to create a zebra crossing near Padavu College to facilitate the students to cross the road.
The deputy commissioner directed In-charge RTO Felix D’Souza to conduct a random inspection in private and service buses in the district on the usage of ticket vending machine.
