Mangaluru : Home Minister G Parameshwara said the jail manual will be amended shortly. An area 40 acres has been identified in Konaje where a jail will be set up as the present jail in Mangaluru is outdated and insufficient.
Speaking to media persons after visiting Mangaluru jail that had witnessed a double murder of inmates by a rival gang on November 2, he said on Sunday that the present jail manual did not allow the police to enter the prison.
This has been hampering the security inside the jail. “The present jail manual is old. It is a challenge to check untoward incidents inside the jail by controlling the inmates.”
After the twin murder, the need for strengthening the security in the prison has been initiated.
The prison department officials have been asked to review the security inside all the prisons in the State. Measures should be taken to ensure that mobile phones, weapons and other drugs do not reach the inmates, he said.
“We will urge the CM and the Finance Minister to include the same in the next budget,” he said adding that issues pertaining to shortage of facilities and personnel too will be tackled soon.
He said that a total of 20 CISF personnel will take charge soon and will be posted outside the prison. Jammers and CCTVs too will be installed in the jail premises.
With regard to the issue of entry of weapons inside the jail to execute the murder of two undertrials inside the jail on November 2, the Home Minister said that the truth will be out once the detailed probe is completed, specifically stating that he spelling out any details on the same would go against the investigation.
