Mangaluru : The Dakshina Kannada district administration has imposed a complete ban on public and religious functions, political meetings, processions and similar events from the midnight of December 5 to the midnight of December 6 in the district.

Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate A.B. Ibrahim passed a magisterial order to this effect on Monday. He said that there are chances of Hindu organisations celebrating victory day and Muslim organisations observing black day on December 6, the day when Babri Masjid was demolished, and hence, the order.

He has got a report from the Superintendent of Police in this connection.

In view of several recent instances wherein the district had witnessed incidents of communal unrest, it was decided to clamp ban on public events under the Karnataka Police Act. During the ban period, no one could carry lethal weapons, stones, etc.; no statement or speech that might affect religious sentiments could be made; no one could distribute or put up pamphlets, posters, etc., and the local administrations cannot permit any public functions to be held.

Those seeking exemption from the prohibitory order should get special permission from the District Magistrate, he said.
