Mangaluru : Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, and Hindu Jagaran Vedike have expressed their opposition to the proposed programme of Islamic preacher Zakir Naik in Mangaluru on January 3.

The three organisations have asked district administration not to permit the programme as it was likely to cause communal discord. Talking to reporters here on Saturday, VHP leader M.B. Puranik accused Mr. Naik of making derogatory references to Hindu gods during his speeches.

He has spoken against India and the laws that are followed.

He has shown disrespect to ‘Vande Mataram’ and has asked Muslims not to sing it. “Communal harmony in the region may be disturbed if he speaks against Hindu religion and the nation in Mangaluru,” Mr. Puranik said.

He said they have planned to invite VHP leader Pravin Togadia to address a convention on January 6.

Unlike Mr. Naik, Mr. Togadia speaks against terrorists and antinational elements. They are yet to finalise the programme of Togadia, he said. HJV Co-convenor Sathyajith Surathkal said there would be protests if the district administration and the police allow Mr. Naik’s programme.

South Karnataka Salafi Movement (SKSM) and other organisations are holding a convention in the city on January 3 in which Zakir Naik will be delivering the keynote address.
