Mangaluru : The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) and Childline on Wednesday rescued three girls and a boy from an unit in Arya Samaj Road that prepares cakes.
The personnel raided the unit following a tip-off about children working in the unit. Shivanand from the DCPU said they found two 17-year-old girls and a 16-year-old boy working in the unit.
These children accused the owner of the unit of harassment as he made them work for long hours. The children also accused the unit’s owner of not paying salary.
Mr. Shivanand said the personnel then visited the house of the unit’s owner where they found a 12-year-old girl working.
All the four children were from Odisha and were here in the city for the last five months.
Mr. Shivanand said Labour department officials were looking whether the unit owner had violated provisions of Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986.
The Child Welfare Committee said that there will be an inquiry about alleged violation of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act.
All four children were produced before the Child Welfare Committee. The committee has rehabilitated these children in fit institutions.
