Mangaluru : Five to six tonnes of mango are expected to arrive at Dr. Shivarama Karantha Pilikula Nisargadhama for ‘Vasanthotsava’, a two-day sale-cum-exhibition of fruits, mainly mango and jackfruit, which will begin at Pilikula on Saturday.
Addressing reporters on Friday, Yogesh H.R., Deputy Director, Department of Horticulture, said mango farmers from Kolar, Ramanagaram and Channapatna would bring fruits for sale. Some of the varieties that will be available are Badami, Raspuri, Mallika, Sindhuri, Neelam, Mundappa, Malgoa and Totapuri.
In addition to these, local wild mango varieties such as Nekkare, Gadde Mavu and Sakkare Mavu too will be available. The jackfruit varieties that will be available are Toobinakere (from Doddaballapur district), Chandra Bakke, Raja Rudraskshi and Sadananda.
As May 22 (Sunday) is International Biodiversity Day, saplings of two near-extinct plant varieties — Nanlina and Neernandi — will be planted at Pilikula.
Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture and Horticulture will organise a ‘savayava mela’ (festival of organic products) at Kadri Park in the city on May 31. Organic farmers from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikkamagaluru districts will participate.
