Bangalore: Andhra Pradesh could be the biggest beneficiary of River Krishna waters flowing through 3 states with Andhra as the riparian, near Bay of Bengal.
The Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal (KWDT) which has adjudicated among 3 states for division of waters for agriculture, has given an extensive verdict running into 2000 pages today (Dec.30).
AP will get 1001 million cubic feet (TMC) of waters. Karnataka’s share is 911 TMC feet. Maharashtra where it springs up, will have only 666 TMC Feet, as per this verdict.
Incase of surplus waters (as in monsoon), Andhra will get 190 TMC feet, Karnataka could raise the height of its Almatti dam. The 3 states have been told to use the river waters only for set purposes decided on by the Tribunal and not to divert the waters.
Karnataka’s Law Minister Suresh Kumar, has welcomed the new decisions of the Tribunal, constituted in April 2004. An Implementation Board will function by April 2011.
