Udupi: Tight police security was provided to the toll plaza at Sasthan (Gundmi) in Udupi district on Friday after the district administration permitted Navayuga Company to collect toll.
Security was provided to prevent any protest or other problems at the plaza. Since the collection of toll began at midnight on Friday, people around were caught by surprise. However, toll was not collected from local vehicles, including two-wheelers and three-wheelers. But other vehicles had to pay toll.
Meanwhile, the National Highway Jagriti Samiti decided to stage a protest against collection of toll at Sasthan in Udupi district at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The samiti said that it was unimpressed by the concessions offered by Navayuga Company.
Meanwhile, the Canara Bus Operators Association, which held its meeting in Udupi, decided that it would neither support nor oppose the bandh call given on February 13.
K. Suresh Nayak, secretary of the association, said that if there was opposition from the public or buses were not allowed to ply on Monday, then the association would be left with no alternative but to suspend bus services.
