Mangalore : Around 200 victims of Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) had staged protest in front of the MSEZ office at Urwa Market on Jan 25, Tuesday against the false job opportunity assurance in return to the agricultural land acquired.
During the protest, a young man called Lokesh, whose family lost their land to MSEZ, attempted to immolate himself by pouring kerosene from the can over himself and setting himself ablaze.
The protestors demanded immediate jobs for all the unemployed members of the families, who lost their land to MSEZ.
Speaking on the occasion, MSEZ is giving different dates to address their grievances, but are doing nothing other than giving dates.
As per the rules put forth, MSEZ will have to provide training and employment to one person in each of the families displaced. A number of students, who have just completed their training, joined the protestors demanding immediate jobs.
Later, the MSEZ officials promised the families that the MSEZ officials will find a solution to their problems. The protestors finally agreed to another date. The protestors demanded that at least a 100 people should be provided jobs on Jan 29.
