Mangaluru : Mayor Kavitha Sanil anwered 25 grievances in 28 calls and assured the callers of necessary actions that will be taken to rectify their problems on Tuesday.

Collection of solid waste from people’s doorsteps not happening properly in Aadu Maroli and Tarethota areas in the city and some homes in Mary Hill not getting water bill for the last five months came to light during the phone-in programme.

A woman caller from Aadu Maroli told the Mayor that notwithstanding road access in the area, door-to-door collection of garbage was not happening. She suggested that the Mayor place bins on the roadside for people to dump waste. The caller said that the area is well connected with roads.

Patrick D’Souza from Tarethota said that the contractor of the corporation was not collecting garbage from the doorsteps daily. Residents tied garbage in plastic bags and kept them near the gates or outside the gates expecting the garbage collectors to pick them. As garbage collection was irregular, street dogs tore the bags and garbage spilled all over the roads. He suggested that the corporation could keep buckets in the area to enable residents to dump the garbage bags there.

Listening to this, the Mayor instructed the Health Officer to ensure that the company which has been awarded the contract for garbage collection did it without any fail in those areas from Wednesday.

A resident from Mary Hill told the Mayor that the corporation have not been issuing water bills to about 20 houses there for the past five months. He said that the corporation has been asking the water bill defaulters to pay or face disconnection. But the civic body itself was not issuing the bills to consumers.

A caller from Pumpwell said that the corporation should construct a public toilet at Pumpwell. It is because passing lorry and truck drivers using the opportunity of the civic body failing to cut the grass there, were relieving themselves after parking their vehicles near a hotel.

A resident from Baikampady pointed out that there were no bus shelters between Mangaluru and Surathkal on the National Highway 66. Replying to it, the Mayor said that she has initiated taluks with Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) for sponsoring bus shelters and the company has responded favourably.
