Mangaluru: A team of officials, led by Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, raided an illegal sand extraction area in Gurpura river bank at Padushedde near Maravoor vented dam in Mangaluru taluk and seized 800 loads of sand.
The raid was carried out on Saturday and the officials from Revenue and Mines and Geology Department who had camped at the site till Monday, seized the illegally stored sand.
The officials have seized 40 boats used for sand extraction and a lorry from the site. A case has been registered under Mining Act against six people for carrying out illegal sand extraction.
The officials also cleared the sheds constructed for the stay of labourers at the site.
In connection with the case, officials from Mines and Geology, Revenue, Police, Labour, Mescom and Railways have filed separate cases.
Senthil said that the seized sand wil be used for the second phase of the work on Shiradi Ghat, after paying royalty to the Mines and Geology department through PWD.
