Mangaluru: Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel at Mangaluru Central turned Good Samaritans on Sunday when they not only treated an ailing daily wage worker, but also got his cash safely deposited in a bank.
A communique here said RPF Inspector Ajay Kumar and Assistant SI V.K. Binoy were on regular rounds at the station on Sunday morning when they came across a semi-conscious man. There was a plastic bag too with him. They administered first aid and brought him to the RPF post and learnt that he was Shivananda Amaravathi from Bagalkot district.
His bag contained ₹70,240 in various denominations stuffed in a bundle.
Mr. Shivanand told police that he was a labourer and suffered from epilepsy. He carried his earnings since he did not know how to safeguard it.
RPF personnel summoned his local friends since Mr. Shivanand did not have any relative in Mangaluru. On Monday, two of his friends, Guruprasad and Devanand, approached RPF personnel and on verification of their credentials, the police handed over the cash to be deposited in a bank.
His friends deposited the amount in a bank and submitted account details, the communiqué said.
Meanwhile, another senior official at Mangaluru Central overstepped his duty and returned a lost purse to its rightful owner on Tuesday.
John Boylan from Scotland, who arrived from Ernakulam, was searching for his lost purse at the station.
While he was searching for the lost purse everywhere, the Chief Commercial Inspector P. Suresan turned out to be a detective, he said.
Though his name was announced over the public address system after getting it from the credit card inside the purse by officials, he had not heard.
Mr. Suresan came searching for a foreign face on the platform and upon noticing Mr. Boylan, handed over the purse after verifying the credentials.
