Mangaluru: Ramakrishna Mission’s Swachhata Abhiyan’s 19th week’s drive was organized in Bunder area on Sunday. Uday Nayak, ACP and Suresh Kumar, PI, Mangaluru North PS flagged off the drive in the presence of Swami Jitakamananda, president, Ramakrishna Mission, Mangaluru. Uday Nayak said, “Cleanliness is important.
Every citizen has to take up responsibility of keeping his surroundings clean and only then this Abhiyan will be successful.”
Volunteers under guidance of Dr Satish Rao, Mohammad Shameem and others, cleaned Mission Street, Nellikai Street, Mohammad Ali Street and Bibi Alabi streets. Police personnel of the station undertook cleanliness on the station premises.
They removed heaps of garbage from all corners of the campus, removed weeds and overgrown grass and washed the premises clean with water. Organisers of Mangaluru Premier League cleaned the compound walls of the station.
They also painted the compound walls under guidance of K V Sathyanarayana. A few volunteers under Imtiyaz cleaned adjoining road and the drains. Ganesh Karnik, MLC, volunteered to paint walls of the police station. Members of Motor Cycle Club removed the garbage dumped for many years besides Canara Goods on Bibi Alabi Road with the help of earth excavating machine. Volunteers removed about 2 tipper loads of garbage from the area.
Volunteers kept decorative flower pots in that area to keep it clean and prevent the public from littering there. Two name boards in North Police Station circle were worn out and were not serving the purpose. Volunteers cleaned the boards and repainted them as Mission Street and Mohammad Ali streets.
Volunteers also removed flex banners illegally tied in the area. Students of St Aloysius College visited houses and shops, distributing handbills on cleanliness awareness.
