Mangaluru: Heavy rain since Monday night led to landslip in Mittakodi that affected the flow of the traffic on the busy road connecting Mudipu and Melkar. Traffic was restored on Tuesday. A few houses and an autorickshaw were damaged in Konaje and Bantwal.
The landslip occurred in the early hours of Tuesday with mud covering about 100 metres of the road at Mittakodi. Police said there was no movement of vehicles when the landslip occurred. The movement vehicles on the road came to a halt from Tuesday morning.
The police said Public Works Department personnel deployed earthmovers to remove debris and facilitate movement of vehicles on the road, which started around 5 p.m., the police said.
Students travelling in an autorickshaw had a miraculous escape following fall of a tree branch near SVS College in Bantwal. The police said the branch of the old tree fell on the autorickshaw driven by its owner Lakshman Poojary. Mr. Poojary was also unhurt, the police said. It also damaged an electric pole nearby that led to power shutdown in the area for a few hours on Tuesday morning.
A part of the house of Nirmala in Dasaramoole in Konaje was damaged following a compound wall collapse. Seven family members were in the house when the incident occurred. None of them were injured, the Konaje police said.
A house belonging to Suresh in Maiyyarabail in B. Mooda village in Bantwal was partially damaged following landslip.
Rain was widespread across Dakshina Kannada with an average of 73.2 mm recorded in the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Highest of 195 mm was recorded in Shirtady Gram Panchayat, followed by 124 mm in Ira of Bantwal, 98.5 mm in Boliyar, 97.5 mm in Konaje and 95.5 mm in Mangaluru (B) Gram Panchayat.
Rain was widespread in Udupi and Uttara Kannada with the districts recording average of 82.6 mm and 33.1 mm, respectively, in the last 24 hours ending at 8. a.m. on Tuesday.
