Mangaluru: Several persons who took part in the Ramakrishna Mission’s special Swacchata Abhiyan Shramdan cleaned the areas around Marnamikatta and Mangaladevi here on Sunday.
It was the last shramdan of Phase 4 of the initiative.
The volunteers removed a cement dustbin near Marnamikatta railway bridge and the unused small shop next it. Land was levelled using an earthmover and flower saplings placed in pots in the area to prevent people from littering it. The volunteers also cleaned Mangaladevi Car Street and visited houses in an effort to spread awareness among the residents on cleanliness.
A release from Ramakrishna Mutt said that as part of phase 4, ‘Swacchata Darshana’ was taken up in 100 high schools where a series of programmes was conducted to create awareness on cleanliness.
Feedback was received from students and their creative thinking tested by asking them to write a small test for 100 marks. More than 10,000 students participated in these exams and about 60 resource persons addressed them. The test papers are being evaluated and the best performers will be awarded in the near future, the release said.
Around 10 drinking water units were installed in the government high schools in Car Street and Balmatta; Madani High School, Ullal; Government Higher Primary School, Vamanjoor; Swami Sadananda Saraswati High School, Nanthur Padavu; Government High School, Moodushedd; Bhagini Samaja, Jeppu; and Higher Primary School, Badriya Nagar, Mallur.
Such plants will be installed in some more schools and selected village panchayats, the release said.
Magician Kudroli Ganesh and his troupe conducted magic shows in 56 schools to create interest on cleanliness among students, the release said.
