Udupi: MLA K. Raghupati Bhat said on Monday that land would be identified for the construction of a slaughterhouse in Udupi city. He was speaking after inspecting the fish market at Adiudupi here.
Mr. Bhat said that since there was no slaughterhouse in the city, mutton vendors were slaughtering goats at the Adiudupi fish market. But this had created problems of cleanliness and the drainage there was getting clogged, he said.
Though there was a small slaughterhouse near Beedinagudde here, it was shut down. This move had left the city without a slaughterhouse.
As a result, mutton stall owners had to make their own arrangements for slaughtering goats, he said.
There had been a long-pending demand from mutton vendors for a slaughterhouse. This was also essential from the viewpoint of hygiene, he said.
There were mutton stalls at the Adiudupi fish market. But slaughtering goats at the fish market was creating problems and there were complaints about it. “We will soon identify land for the new slaughterhouse,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Bhat directed Udupi City Municipal Council Commissioner Anand Kalholikar to take steps to maintain cleanliness in the Adiudupi fish market. He also listened to the grievances of fisherwomen and others at the fish market.
