Udupi : District Crime Investigation Bureau (DCIB) officers seized 10 tonnes of rice that was being illegally transported near Heeriyadka on Wednesday.
The huge quantity of rice was being transported without proper documents and permission.
One C P Shafiq (36) of Kozhikode was arrested while another accused Rajesh Nayak of Perdoor fled the scene.
Sources in the Election Office at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office complex said that prima facie there were no proofs to say that the rice bags were being transported for distribution to woo the voters.
However, as police are still investigating more details will be known in the days to come, sources added.
Acting on a tip off, District Crime Investigation Bureau team, led by Inspector Kiran C, intercepted the truck near Hiriyadka in the district.
DCIB Assistant Sub Inspector Ravichandra and other staffs were also part of the team.
Officials from the Food and Civil Supplies department confiscated 10 tonnes of rice packed in 130 bags.
On the bags, it was written as FCI Punjab.
Rajesh Nayak, who is at large, is the prime accused in the case, said DySP Jaishankar who added that efforts were on to nab Rajesh.
Heeriyadka police have registered a case.
