Udupi : After doctors announce Sudeep’s brain dead, his elder brothers, Sandeep and Pradeep, expressed their wish to donate his organs. Two corneas, two kidneys, liver, pancreas, heart and lungs were harvested and given to eight patients.
Sudeep Poojary 30, admitted to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, after being grievously injured in the accident, was declared brain dead on Tuesday night.
As per Jeevasarthakathe protocols, two corneas and two kidneys were retained by Kasturba Hospital for registered patients while the liver and pancreas were sent to patients in BGS Hospital Bengaluru. The heart valve and lungs were sent to patients in BGS Hospital Chennai.
Sandeep and Pradeep said, “Organ donation is a noble cause and our brother has done a great deed in death.”
KMC medical superintendent Dr Avinash Shetty said, “Organ donation saves lives and people should be encouraged to do it. It’s the first time this hospital has conducted three renal transplants in a day.”
The organs were transferred from Manipal to Mangaluru International Airport via a green corridor with the support of Udupi police, and then on to Bengaluru.
