Udupi : Due to heavy rain that lashed the district from the past three days, two people reportedly lost their lives on Thursday. Many houses were reportedly damaged.
In Kaup taluk, Sulochana Devadiga, 42, the wife of Chandra Sekhara, drowned at ‘Shankatheeratha’, a stream, after accidentally falling into it. She was a resident of Kurkal gram panchayat, Kunjarujiri.
According to the information received, she had gone to a haystack around 3.30 pm. While returning home at 5.30 pm, she had to cross the stream, and she slipped into it with grass on her head.
The incident happened around 5.30 pm, and as it was raining heavily, there were no people around. Later, when her family members searched for her, at around 9 pm, her body was found in the stream.
Ravindra Kulal,35, from Kuntekumeri in Kukkehalli, at Hiryadka police station limits in Udupi taluk, is the other deceased.
He was an autorickshaw driver, and after getting done with work, while going home, as it was raining heavily, he could not drive, and hence stopped the autorickshaw on the road and stood in the the car shed of a nearby house, which belonged to his friend Diwakar Shetty. Due to strong winds, a tree next to the house got uprooted and fell on the house.
Ravindra sustained a serious head injury and died on the spot. He is survived by his wife and three-year-old daughter. Heavy rainfall in Udupi in the last two days has caused water logging on Car Street and Anantheswara Temple at Krishna Mutt.
Waves from the rough sea washed ashore and entered houses near the beach. The non-stop rain, gales and large waves lashing the shore created panic among locals. The sea eroded 80 meters land in the area. Many trees were also uprooted.
Around 5.30 am on Friday, the roof of an old building fell on the road due to gales. There was no casualty reported, as it happened in the early hours, and there was no crowd in the area. Locals immediately cleared the road.
