New Delhi : Nirbhaya convicts will hang on March 3 at 6 am. Fresh black warrants will be issued for the rapists who were convicted for the brutal gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student in the national capital on December 16, 2012.
The Patiala House Court on Monday issued fresh death warrants against four convicts while hearing a petition by the state and Nirbhaya’s parents.
Earlier, Delhi High Court on February 5 granted a week’s time to the four convicts to avail of all legal remedies available to them and said that the convicts cannot be hanged separately since they were convicted for the same crime.
The four convicts – Pawan Gupta, Akshay Thakur, Vinay Thakur, Vinay Thakur and Mukesh Singh had filed separate curative petitions before the Supreme Court after President Ram Nath Kovind turned down their mercy petitions.
A relieved Asha Devi, Nirbhaya’s mother told the media that she was hopeful that her daughter will finally get justice. “Finally, a decision has been taken and I am satisfied with the newly issued warrants. There’s light at the end of the tunnel and I haven’t lost hope. I am , they’ll be hanged,” she said.
January 22 was first set as the date of their execution after a long drawn legal procedure. Next, February 1 was the new date set as the convicts had appealed to the apex court.
One of the convicts Pawan Gupta has claimed through his lawyer AP Singh that he has mental health issues and hence is medically unfit to be executed.
