Mangaluru : Ullal City Municipality on Monday launched ‘Ullal Brand’, organic manure produced using the wet waste collected in the city limits.

Mangaluru MLA U T Khader launched the product to the market and said Ullal Brand will be sold to farmers at Rs 10 per kg and it will be available in a pack of 10kgs.

“Managing waste is a major issue in all cities. The initiative of Ullal city municipality is a model for the entire state of Karnataka. I will bring this initiative to the notice of the government and suggest the implementation of a state-wide scheme. All urban local bodies across the state should commence the project to convert the wet waste generated in their cities into organic manure,” Khader said.

City municipal council commissioner Rayappa said that the city generates an average of 11 tons of wet waste per day.

“Initially, we started the project by converting two tons of wet waste collected from restaurants, markets and homes everyday following the directions of the National Green Tribunal. We are now converting an average of four tons of wet waste into organic manure per day in Ullal. An average of four tons of manure is being produced every month. The manure can be used for agriculture and for gardening. We have plans to increase the production so that no waste will be sent to Mangaluru City Corporation’s dump yard in Pachanady in future,” he said.

City municipal council president Chithrakala K said shile poultry waste generated in the city is being processed into animal feeds by an industry in Bykampady, dry waste is sold to another agency for recycling, she said.
