Mangalore: A protest (Dharana Satyagraha) conducted by CITU activists, to urge proper provision for road-side small scale vendors was held in front of Mangalore City Corporation office on Thursday (May 19) morning at 10am at Lalbagh in city, seeking a decent livelihood for these commoners. The meeting was inaugurated and addressed by Vasanth Achary.
He stated that the roadside stall keepers and vendors formed an indivisible part of common people’s life, providing them with essential materials at cheap rates.
The sellers are unorganized workers and maintain poor families. They should be provided with proper arrangements by MCC to carry on their small trades. But in the context of a clean city, they are being removed by MCC in a lorry called Tiger mercilessly causing thousands of rupees losses to vendors by city officials and policemen. This should end forthwith, he said.
The speaker made demands to stop seizure operations by ‘Tiger’ vehicle, and make suitable alternate arrangements in a proper area for traders to carry on their regular vocation. Their losses should be immediately compensated. A meeting should be called quickly between CITU leaders and MCC officials to end oppression and make arrangements to accommodate roadside vendors within city.
