Mangalore: A Computer – navigated Knee-replace surgery has created new hopes for many a patient in orthopedic department in local hospitals.
The pioneering effort was conduct by a team of surgeons who successfully performed a Knee-replacement on Friday (July15) on Ms. Vasanthi Shetty in the new method, when the patient was suffering for 5 years from Osteo-arthritis, a disease of the Knee.
Dr. Christopher Sagar led the team. He came all the way from Switzerland to AJ Hospital in Kuntikana, to work with D. Sudarshan Bhandary head of the specialty dept. on Friday.
Experts regard the disease (Osteo-arthritis) as the top disorder among Indians. The surgery involves removal of diseased knee parts and (Computer-assisted) knee replacement. Surgeons can perform now with higher precision and smaller incisions.
The surgery was telecast alive at the ‘in-house’ auditorium in the A J Hospital, viewed by 35 doctors across DK dt. The rehabilitation takes place soon either at home or at a centre.
