Mangalore: Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University Bidar and College of Fisheries Mangalore jointly organized a national training programme on ”Bio-security in Aquaculture-Aqua medicine” at Prof HPC Shetty Hall in Fisheries College premises on August 10, Wednesday.

Veterinary College Dean Dr S Yathiraj inaugurated the programme and said that the organization is doing good job by arranging such programmes  so that experts in each field will educate others on the food habits of each species.

He also said that, this Government of India sponsored training programme will give orientation on pharmacology and toxicology by the fish health professionals and teachers from 15 fisheries colleges across the country.

Fisheries College Dean Dr K M Shankar welcomed the gathering and said that with aquaculture contributing significantly to the total fish production in India and the great loss incurred to the aquaculture industry due to the microbial diseases, there is need to carry out research in pharmacology and toxicology with regard to aquaculture. The Ministry of Agriculture will have to bring strict regulation on drugs used in aquaculture.

Dr James F Turnbull, Professor at University of Sterling Institute of Aquaculture participated as the guest of honour on the occasion.
