Mangalore : Mangalore City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said that there is no problem of drug addiction and drugs supply in city, since there is no facts and figures found till now.
Speaking at the Drug Awareness Programme held at hid office on August 11, Thursday, he said that as the number of educational institution increase in the city, these kind of problem related to drugs will occur.
During the discuss, Dr Sathish Rao, psychiatric said that most of young people are admitted in the rehab centre and taking treatment for their drug addiction. Earlier most of the college students used to get admitted, but now the school students of 8th standard to 10 th standard also admit in large number.
According to the statistics, around 12.4 percent boys and 8 percent girls consume drugs regularly. Hence this these must be controlled through awareness programme, he said.
Sharadha College Principal Leela Upadhayaya said that they cannot identify the groups or single student and tell them its bad effects, hence the college need a counseling centre to create awareness among students.
Prof Richard of St Aloysius College said that the the students after their class at 4.30 loaf around the shops and restaurants till 6.30, hence the police department must conduct and investigation on such shops, he said.
KPT principal Jayakumar said that according to the high court order act of 2003, thre mustnot be any shops selling tobacoo products upto 100 meters near the institutional campus, but no one is following it and there is a shop near to the coumpound wall of KPT selling cigar and other products, he said. If this is followed, then 50 percent of the problem will be solved, he added.
Mr Singh said that the shools and college must call a general meeting for the studentsa s well as parents and discuss on the matter. The students union must organize counseling and awareness programmes, apart from organisaing star nite and cultural programmes.
Dr Hamsraj Alva said that Drug mafia is a huge network and it is esstential to break this with the help of parents, police and doctors to avaoid death of youths caused by consuming drugs.
Prof G N Bhat , principal of Canara Degree Colleg said that there are some shops near collge campus, which do not have any essential commodities, but still studemts go there. Most of the students are even seen going to mobile shops often in the evenings.
