Delhi: Sharpening his attack on the Centre, Lokpal crusader Anna Hazare on Sunday revealed how the government had cheated him at every step of his fight and warned of unparalleled protests across the country if the Bill was not agreed upon by August 30. Hazare was addressing thousands at the Ramlila Maidan, where his supporters had assembled after a 5-km march from the historic India Gate.
“The government’s intention has never been noble and clean. They don’t intend to stop corruption and that’s why they put so many spokes in my effort to bring this Bill. After the Right To Information Act, the civil society has come together once again to put the corrupt behind the bars but the government ditched us,” Hazare said. “There have been seven meetings in the last two months with five ministers. We put forth 71 points before them, but they backtracked,” he added.
Narrating details of his arrest by Delhi Police on August 16, Hazare revealed how he had turned the tables on the officials. “The government tried to quash my protest by first agreeing to let me fast and later cheating me like they did to Baba Ramdev. At 5.30 am they came to call me, I agreed and went out with them. I was told later that I have been arrested. I was unfazed and said ‘I am ready.’ The cops were surprised. Then again in jail, they cheated. Then they wanted to send me out of the jail at the earliest but I refused until my demands were met,” he said.
Hazare warned that if the government doesn’t come to a decision by August 30, it will witness a mass movement across the country.
“I want people to make sacrifices without which nothing will move… Don’t forget Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru. Sit in protest outside every minister’s and MP’s house. Sing bhajans of Raghupati Raghav Rajaram,” he said.
