Mangalore: A 75 year old giant-sized tree overturned and fell across the highway (NH 66) near Thokkottu in the early morning hours of Friday, Sept.16. As there were no vehicles moving on the road then, there was no loss of human life or property.

The huge tree fell with a cracking thud, loosened at the roots due to digging wok carried out as a part of the road-widening efforts. Continuous rains facilitated the fall.

Yet another tree close by faces similar threats in monsoon winds, rains and digging work.

The Police, fire fighters and local volunteers joined in to clear the road blockade caused by fallen tree branches.
