Belthangady: The DGP-IGP of Karnataka, Neelam Achyutha Rao announced a compensation of Rs.10 lakh to the bereaved family of Mahadeva S Mane, a policeman killed by naxalites is an encounter at Manjalkadu near Savnal, in Belthangady in the early hours of Sunday, October 9.
40 year old Mane of Bijapur, who was one of the members of Anti Naxal Force (ANF) was shot in the midnight encounter with Naxalites. He has a wife and two daughters.
IGP Rao added that another Rs.5 lakhs will be given from CM’s fund to Mane’s family, in addition to Rs.10 lakh announced.
The war started on Saturday night in the forests of Belthangady during combing operation by ANF with police help from Shimoga and Chikkamagalur. 15 Naxals made visits to villagers’ houses for groceries.
Several rounds fire was exchanged. Labhu Ram, SP, rushed to the spot. Bipin Gopalakrishna, ADGP, Alok Mohan, IGP and Vasudeva Moorthy SP (of ANF) are also on the spot. Over 300 ANF men and police officers are deployed to hunt down and capture the naxalites hiding deep in the DK forests.
