Belthangady: Kadathoka Manjunatha (85) who remained as the chief singer of Dharmasthala Mela (Yakshagana) for 35 years, died at home on Sunday (October 31) at Kumbarmakki in Haladipura of Honnavara Taluk.
He leaves wife, a son and 4 daughters. The deceased Bhagawat had complete mastery over Thenku- Thittu and Badagu-Thittu singing styles on stage.
As the main Bhagawat, he lent a high profile to Dharmasthala Kshetra Mahatme (greatness). He was a capable stage director and received Rajyotsava (November 1) award and Parthi Subba prize as well.
He learnt the art of central stage singing from Shambhu Bhagawathar. He wrote over 20 Yakshagana episodes. He has worked for Kirki, Kolgi, Muroor, Mulky teams, apart from Dharmasthala troupe.
He was also a teacher in a school, before taking up full –time work as Bhagawatha.
Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr. D. Virendra Heggade and family members have expressed their deep sorrow over K. Manjunatha Bhagawatha’s sad demise, apart from Kumble Sunder Rao and Prof. M.L. Samaga who are connected with Yaksha Academy.
