Mangalore: Prajna Counselling Centre in city organised a workshop on Wednesday, November23 on “Women and Property rights.” There were sessions on law, gender inheritance, succession Act, and problem solutions. The participants were told about Karnataka Household Assets Survey(KHAS)project conducted by IIM-Bangalore Centre for Public Policy.
The speaker(Soumya Bhat) said that the project covered Ghana(Africa), Ecuador(S.America) and India(Asia).Local work started in 2010, with a survey of 4,110 families in Karnataka to find out possession of assets/property by men and women.
Possession of and, how it is acquired, women’s ownership in it, and the role of women in taking decisions were discussed.
The survey showed that men possessed land(3 times more) but women possessed jewellery more. Soumya Bhat stressed on the importance of having legal knowledge among women.
Marital status was no bar for women to claim share in ancestral property, the lawyer stated.
